Jengibre de primavera / Spring Ginger

(English version below)

(English version below)

English version

Ever since I moved to London my free time has been significantly reduced. The thing is that London is a quite demanding city, between work, commuting and on top of that trying to keep up with everything going on in the city I am exhausted. In between I went a couple of days to Italy with my family to enjoy the beach and sun that seems to be so scarce here in London
I have to say however that this summer is being very generous with us. To my surprise we are having very sunny days and although it is not as hot as in Italy (except in the tube that is a human oven) it is fairly hot.

I am loving summer here so far, everyone is outside, girls in little dresses and boys in shorts. Bursting pubs and parks that are amazed to be the centre of attention for so long, markets, festivals, open air cinemas, etc. London in summer is unbelievable!
There are many rumors about London out there and one of them is that the food is not good.... I am afraid that I have to disagree with that... There is such a variety of choices and good choices! Of course you can end up in a disgusting oily fish and chips restaurant if you are not careful enough but you can also go to "rock and sole" and have the most amazing fish and chips you have ever eaten. The choice is yours. Besides with the amount of markets in every borough I can tell you that the vegetables and fruits are wonderful and fresh.
And this is what I want to show you today. I fall in love with these summery, tasty and juicy fruits I found at two footsteps from my door. They are not only a pretty face... they are as gorgeous from the inside than they are from the outside. I bought so many that I had fruits for lunch and dinner for a whole week (ok I am exaggerating a bit...). Each bite was an explosion of flavors, pure ecstasy.
I made a simple salad with the fruits you see, I added some grounded hazelnuts, two tablespoons of sugar and some vanilla extract to make it even more irresistible.
Touching heaven with my bare hands... Enjoy summer

The magazine is full of nice recipes and lovely plans to spend the winter (or the summer if you are on this side of the pond...). I show you some pics of one of the recipes I contributed with (you will also find the recipe in english here) that is my version of the ¨revuelto gramajo¨ very typical in Argentina. This version is a kind of healthier than the traditional one and I can tell you it is AS good!

I stop talking now and let you go through the magazine. Enjoy the simple things of life.

Una linda propuesta y una receta / A lovely proposal and a recipe

(English version below)

English version

A couple of weeks ago I received an e-mail from Juli from the blog Horneando Algo. She was proposing me to collaborate in a project she and her friends Agustina from Ponete el Delantal and Amanda from Buenos Aires Para Chicas are putting together from Argentina. I jumped from my chair and said yes!

The magazine is called Jengibre (ginger), I absolutely love that name!!! and it will be about lifestyle, cooking, sweet moment, about those things we love basically. The first number will be a winter number (remember it is from Argentina) and it will be available soon. Put I like it in the facebook website if you want to have a look what's going on and if you want to practice your spanish ;)

For this number I prepared this aubergine and walnut ricotta pesto inspired on the ricotta cream from Bea's book. It is delicious and do not be mislead by the size since it is small but quite nourishing so one per person is more than enough as a starter.
It is very easy to prepare and you can even make the aubergines and the ricotta cream in advance and ensemble the timbale at the very last moment. I strongly recommend that you try to do homemade breadcrumbs since it adds a rustic and crunchy taste that contrast perfectly well with the creamy texture of the ricotta cream. Hope you enjoy it!

And before I say goodbye I would like to thank once again Juli, Agus and Amanda for letting me contribute to their lovely adventure. THANKS GIRLS!!

Torta 1-2-3-4 y un paseo por Inverness / 1-2-3-4-Cake and an escapade to Inverness

(English version below)

Me transporta a casa.

Facil no?

English Version

Lately everything around me is new and overwhelming. It is quite difficult for me to have a routine because everyday there is something unexpected in the city of clouds. Every day is a new adventure with plenty of places to go, visiting friends and discovering London... an overdose of movement and trains. To make it clear, I am not complaining, I love it! but sometimes I need to stop and go back to the roots. This is why I was craving for this cake and so I cooked it. It brings me back home.

The 1-2-3-4 Cake, this is the name of this cake, at least for me. I think this is the very first cake I have ever baked as a child. Not that I was actively cooking when I was a child, this was actually the only cake I new how to prepare and most probably it was also the case for my mom who, lets face it, is not much into cooking. It is so simple to do as it is to remember the ingredients. 4 eggs, 3 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of single cream, and so its name. Easy, right?

Since in the past few days we had loads of visits I thought that I could prepare two different variants of this cake that would cover dessert and breakfast. I separated the preparation in two and I made a tiny cake that ended up to be quite tall and nourishing, and a loaf perfect to have in the morning with the ¨cafe-latte¨. The cake as I show you here today is the typical birthday cake in Argentina, with two layers of ¨dulce de leche¨ and chocolate ganache. Sooo good! and even though it was small I could even take a piece at work to indulge my colleagues.
As for the loaf, it is perfect for breakfast because you can dip it in the latte or put jam on it. Yumie! It is a very versatile preparation so you can be very creative! you can even add apples or strawberries when baking!. As for me I chose lemon zest.

Not only we had visitors these days but we were the visitors of the monster of Ness Lake!! With A. we took a bus and 10 hours later (yes ten hours... the cheapest option) we where in the Highlands, in Inverness (Scotland), the house of the famous monster and the Lock Ness (the castle). This place is so mysterious... and with endless landscapes. Kilometers and kilometers of fields, hills, trees and sheeps. Dessert beaches, mighty winds and hesitant clouds. It is a perfect place to house bizarre creatures, we all know the truth but when you are there... you start having doubts... is the monster myth or true? In any case, we had a great time, we always do when we are together.

See you all next time and on the meantime be happy :)

Para mi querida La Plata / Dedicated to my dear La Plata

English version below

Cruz roja: www.cruzroja.org.ar/new/donaciones/individuo.php

Cuenta Corriente Nº 91344/97
CBU Nº 0110012920000091344977

This was supposed to be a spring post, why the beauty of spring colors and the first spring fruits, but I cannot just turn the back to what has happened in my home town and the consequences of it. There was a big flood because of an endless rain and most people lost everything. I hate to see my family and friends suffering from what happened, the water took everything, from the treasures kept under the beg as a kid, to full houses and the worst of all... lives... My heart is deeply hurt by this and once again I ask my-self... what am I doing so far from home? I could be there helping people or simply helping my mom clean and repair our house. Thanks God all the people I love is in good health, this at least makes me breath with relief....

Anyways it is useless to moan on it, it is better to take actions since it is also my problem even if I am far away.  I don't want to be sited here regretting the fact that I am not there, I want to help in some way and I wil need your help on this. I am planning some things my-self to donate money to La Plata but I will tell you more details soon. For the moment there are plenty of places where we can contribute and help people even from far away.

Un snack con pan casero y verduras lindas / A home-made bread with beautiful vegetables snack

English version below

(hacemos pizza casera?), me dijo. Y yo feliz! Pizza a go-go, hasta reventar!

English version

Hi there! this post is the most spontaneous I've ever made, it just came like that, and it begun through the eyes. I usually think about the recipe I will share with you, it has to be interesting or have something that makes it special (at least for me....). I wanted to put something sweet today but the way I ended up with this sandwich deserves sharing.
It all started in Saint Valentin's day. With A. we don't usually make a big deal about it. Neither in Italy nor in Argentina is soooo imporatnt as it is here apparently. However as a girl I am... I get rapidly infuenced by the publicity and I asked A. very casually... ¨hey babe what are we doing for St Valentine's day?¨ and he came with an idea that I wouldn't reject (and he knew it). He said  ¨what about home made pizzas at home¨, yeahhhh I am in!
I already showed you how to make A.'s wonderful pizzas so this is not today's recipe. It is more about the yeast necessary for it. Believe it or not, in London is not that easy to find fresh yeast, I only found a pack with 4 yeast cubes and we only used one for the pizza. With the rest... I made bread.

Sunday morning, after breakfast and some walking around in the house I decided to go into the kitchen. If I wanted to make bread I new where to look for advises, so I went to have a look at the blog ¨Bake the world¨ and I started my bread journey. I was missing some ingredients so I quickly went out to buy some stuff and on my way I stopped by the fruit and vegetable shop. I bought these tiny lovely cress (that I have never seen before, and I know now why Aran uses them so much!), the reddest and most fleshy cherry tomatoes, and the cutest little onions!!! Everything was shouting, photograph me!

I went back home and started with the bread, I found a very nice recipe from ¨Cerezos en flor¨ with a yogurt sourdough. I loved this recipe! the bread turns out to be dense but spongy, very very nice. While the bread was raising I started shooting photos of the veggies I bought before. The light of the late afternoon was completely ideal for it! While I was shooting, I couldn't think of anything but to eat what I had in front of me, I imagined the soft onions with the sweet touch of the tomatoes and the freshness of the cress inside a bread buns just coming out of the oven.

I went straight to the kitchen and put the bread in the oven, cooked the onion and tomatoes and once everything was ready, I prepared myself the most wonderful sandwich! A few pics of my trophy and I was enjoying my creation. Such a wonderful feeling, maybe the beauty of the vegetables, the smell of the home baked bread and the spontaneity of the the result made everything perfect!
Keep this filling in mind for a big dinner you may have, since it can make a very good and easy topping  on a toasted bread slice. I pre-cooked the rest of the buns and put the in the freezer once cooled down, so whenever I want some bread I put them straight in the oven!

Un poco de mis comienzos en Londres y mi Navidad en Italia con una sopa de cebolla / Something about my first days in London and my Italian Christmas, with a warm onion soup.

(English version below)

Aunque extrañe mucho a mi familia!!!

English version

Already settled in London. With the clouds on my roof, and my energies completely reloaded, I come back to my blog. London welcomes me with an extremely cold weather and a nice quite borough. There is something about London that makes me think of Buenos Aires... it is maybe a matter of big cities because if I compare it to Lausanne then, it is quite a change. London is impersonal and ¨the client is always right¨, even if they damn you on the back, they will always smile back at you.

Anyways, what is important to me is that my life is starting to come back to normal, with loads of new and exiting things. The flat is nice and comfortable, my new job is very interesting and above all things I found again my love, that fills me with peace and gives me all the strength I need to start again without looking back.

London before Christmas is quite a chaos, people everywhere... including me... I bought my gifts in my favorite place here (for now), Portobello Market. I love that place!!! After Christmas... London is still a chaos... but I like it, it is a nice chaos after all.

I always try to go back home for Christmas, to the summer... but this year we went to A. hometown (Magliano Sabina) in Italy, to celebrate with his family. As every time I go to MS, I find family, friends and loads of good food.

We obviously ate to explode and we also brought some nice and genuin goods to eat back at home. My favourite X-mas gift... a huge piece of paremsan cheese!  We also got some olive oil, salami, ¨capocollo¨ (the neck of the pork, you can see it in one of the photos here) and other amazing treats that as you can imagine are exquisite and when it is from its own production it has an added value.
X-mas in Italy is very different from the argentinian version, it is obviously on winter (as many of you have certainly noticed...) but the way people live it is also different. In Italy, and I guess that in Europe in general, it is much more traditional than in Argentina, more familiar and with different food. At A's home the typical x-mas things are the ¨fritelli¨ (fried vegetables and fruits) and the living creche. But the most peculiar thing is the ¨zampogna¨ played by A.'s dad. It has a beautiful melody, the one that gives you goosebumps. And of course, not to forget the mass at midnight!
And this is more or less it, x-mas and new years with family, friends and my love. Not bad at all, although I missed my family a lot!
Now it's over, we are back home, and back to work, trying to live the winter the warmest possible. This Sunday I wanted prepare something warm and simple, I prepared an onion soup, excellent and different from the soups I usually have. As a sider, I cooked some tomatoes au gratin, inspired by A.'s mom that usually makes them and are one of my favourites (although she makes them quite different and usually with aubergine instead of tomatoes). Of course the parmesan cheese was, is and will be in most of my receipes these days, I put it everywhere!!! and I also eat it alone, it is so good!
Enjoy the snow and cook soups! :)
